Our Women’s Group attracts a wide range of women from the local Leith community and further afield. Ranging from early 20’s to mid 80’s, the women come from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds facing personal challenges including loneliness, poverty, physical and mental health issues, relationship difficulties, addiction, stress and low self-esteem.
The Group meets weekly on a Tuesday for lunch and activities. Food is provided by Fareshare and cooking is led by the Community Chef with an emphasis on learning how to make low-cost, healthy meals. By merging the Community Kitchen into the women’s group we have provided volunteering opportunities to the women, building their confidence, developing their cookery skills and allowing them to help produce a recipe book of the dishes to make at home. This year, seven teams of Tesco Bank volunteers have provided and cooked lunch.

Activity sessions provide an opportunity to develop new skills, grow in confidence and have fun, with a crèche providing valuable ‘me time’ for the mums. With generous funding from Martin Currie Investment Management and fundraising within the group, YMCA Edinburgh provided trips to North Berwick and East Links Family Park. These were hugely successful, providing the women and their children with opportunity for a great day out and the chance to get to know each other better in a different environment.
