Aspiring to change lives
Aspire mentoring is a programme developed by YMCA Scotland to support local children's and young people as they move from Primary to Secondary education. Aspire is firmly rooted in the local community , partnering with local schools and volunteers.
Pupils at the upper end of their Primary School education are identified by their school as being vulnerable and in need of additional support. The pupils are referred to the Aspire programme where they are matched with a locally trained volunteer mentor.
We are currently working in Oxgangs and Craigmillar and Jacqueline MacKenzie, Headteacher, Pentland Primary School Edinburgh, says:
"Aspire mentoring has exceeded our expectations in terms of the support it provided to the children referred, with the voluntary aspect strengthening trust and partnership working. All those we referred gained from the support, making a significant, positive difference to the children; it is a wonderful programme!"
